There are many styles of wedding photography and lots of wonderful photographers to choose from. You might find, like most couples, as they start their search for a wedding photographer you can find the decision making process overwhelming. This purpose of this guide is to explain what Reportage Wedding Photography is and what the benefits are for you.
Reportage wedding photography is fresh, unique and natural. The photos aren’t posed and they aren’t directed. The photos capture what happens on your day and how you are feeling. That is why they are unique! The difference to other wedding photography is that your photographer doesn’t tell you what to do, where to go, how to stand or how to feel. When you have invested so much into your wedding, being there to fully enjoy the magic of your wedding day without being directed all day long is priceless!

The photos will bring back the memories of your day
There are many wonderful styles of wedding photography and lots of great photographers creating stunning images. You have probably seen them as you browse social media and different photographers’ websites. These photos are often beautiful and stunning. The main difference between these styles and reportage wedding photography is what you will remember. Reportage photos connect to your heart’s memory and can transport you back to the magical feelings you experienced on your wedding day. I believe that is what we all value deep down. Especially so as time passes! Memories of emotional and funny moments and our friends and family. How we were. How they were. Anything other than reportage photography is all about your being directed to do something i.e. to stand a certain way, to look in a certain direction, to re-do what you just did. Any interference from your photographer will just lead to memories of being told to do something on your big day.
You are free to fully enjoy your wedding day
This one, for me, and all my wedding couples is huge! We’ve all experienced weddings where we haven’t gotten to speak to the bride and groom before dinner as they have been busy away somewhere with their photographer. Depending on timings on the day this can sometimes even delay the dinner start time! Think too about fully enjoying the fun moments as they happen all throughout the day and having photos capturing these real moments. A skilled photographer will be able to be in your presence without affecting what is happening. He or she will be unobtrusive. The key to capturing these images is getting close enough without affecting what is naturally happening. Trust and feeling at ease with my couples is so important as that translates to moments where you can look at the camera without feeling self-conscious. It’s like you are looking at a friend and sharing how you are feeling.
It’s ideal if you are camera shy
On almost every wedding I shoot the bride and / or groom says they don’t like posing for photos. I’ve heard that so often I come to the conclusion that almost everybody feels that way. Even professional models have to work hard to create a look and that’s their full time job! You might also think you don’t want a photographer taking photos of you all day long. That’s where the real skill of a reportage photographer comes into play. It’s not about camera technology. It’s not about technique. It’s about presence and building a rapport with couples so they feel completely relaxed with their photographer being around. You will hardly notice your photographer as you will be busy getting married, lovingly connecting with your partner and having fun with everyone. And when you do see your photographer you’ll probably just think, “Sure there’s Tadhg there doing his thing” and smile.

It’s simple really: when we feel fab we look our best. A beautiful dress, hair and make-up helps of course! Add to that the the spark inside you radiating out that leads to the best photos. The spark of joy you are feel on your day, the intimate connection between your and your beloved, the embrace of a cherished friend. These are the magical moments, when photographed naturally, that will elevate your wedding photography to the sublime!
The photos will be of real emotional moments
We are all primarily emotional beings. It’s not so much about what we do it’s about how we feel as we are doing it. And a wedding is a wonderful emotional and joyful event! Real emotional moments can’t be staged. They just happen. A reportage wedding photographer will be able to connect to the emotional events of the day. That is the difference. There is no technique to do so that can be taught. That is why I love reportage.
The photos will capture things you didn’t see
It’s a privilege for me to be invited to photograph your wedding day. Being there for bridal preparations, groom preparations, your ceremony and moving among your guests gives me a perspective of your whole day like no other. You simply can’t be everywhere at once! The moments of your aunts and uncles playing Jenga, kids eating ice cream, the groom drinking a whiskey with the groomsmen, flower girls getting ready and passing the time doing twirls in the next room. All of these moments add to a complete and magical story of your day.
The photos capture the fun
Reportage photographers don’t create fun they photograph the fun. Real fun isn’t staged, it’s spontaneous and unique. Being present and aware of what is happening and ready to shoot at a moments notice are the skills your reportage photographer uses to capture fleeting fun moments.
It doesn’t all have to be reportage
It’s possible to shoot entire weddings in reportage style but many couples want a few posed photos too.
You might like to consider including a couple shoot on the day. I keep this process as brief as possible (

He made sure to get all the photos we had asked for on the day then blended into the crowd and was able to capture amazing candid photos of the ceremony, ourselves and our guests. One of the most important parts of our wedding planning for us was picking the right photographer, and Tadhg was all of that and more (we searched high and low for the right person and we knew when we saw his work that he was the man for the job). Unobtrusive
Would definitely recommend Tadhg. He photographed our wedding recently in Kilkenny and we love the results. He met with us before the big day to get a feel for what we wanted and really made us feel at ease. On the day he was very professional and helpful but also unobtrusive. After the wedding he was very patient as we tried to decide on which photographs to include in our final album. I would highly recommend Photographic Memory!

Highly recommend Tadhg
Highly recommend Tadhg, he photographed our wedding in Killashee. We did so much research but when we came across Tadhg’s website and previous work it was very obvious he was the best we had come across by a long shot. Tadhg encouraged us to think about shots that were important to us before our big day to ensure he gave us what we wanted, but along with those we got a collection of amazing show stopping, mood capturing masterpieces. Tadhg is so skillful with an experienced eye for a photograph composition, none of which I appreciated until we got our photos from Tadhg. I have never seen any photos as amazing as Tadhg’s. It’s very hard to explain but he managed to capture the mood and joy of the day so that looking at the album now triggers those happy feelings again. I don’t think a video does that as much as great photos. We found Tadhg ourselves on the internet l because we loved his work, even though we had recommendations from friends & family. It was the best money we spent. We never noticed Tadhg at all during the ceremony, or reception, he was so unobtrusive, and the formal wedding photos we did request were done so efficiently which left us so much time to enjoy our pre-reception with our guests. Tadhg is a rare find because he is so experienced and can give you the formal wedding shots if you want them but is also creative and modern and knows the latest camera skills etc so you end up getting so many amazing bonus shots that are outstanding and you could never have asked for or imagined. And they end up being the ones that you hang on your walls. We went for the linen album choice which is also stunning!

He put us right at ease
Tadhg was our photographer for our wedding and we couldn’t recommend him highly enough. He is so professional and is always there to help with any of our queries. He listened to everything we wanted and always gave his honest and professional opinion to help with our ideas. Tadhg has been nothing but a gentleman since the day we first met him. I had previously worked with Tadhg while I was doing hair for a wedding and I loved his non invasive style, we hardly knew he was there which suited me perfectly as I get very anxious when alot of people are around me. On the morning he was raring to go, he got all of my desired shots and a whole lot more. My pictures are amazing and I think he made me look better haha he is also very affordable in his prices.
